SUSTAINABILITY
We don’t want to greenwash, and we are aware that there is still a lot to do to reach full sustainability in the beauty industry, but we are committed to do the best we can for our planet.
We have done and still doing lots of research to make sure our ingredients and packaging are as sustainable as possible.
Raw Ingredients
Many of our products contain ‘upcycled’ oils, such as Apricot Kernel, Macadamia Nut, Pomegranate Seed and Avocado Oils, and Olive Squalane. These oils are made using seeds, kernels, fruit fleshes etc. that are waste byproducts from the food industries, which minimise waste, require fewer resources to produce and reduce the overall environmental footprint of production.
To try and reduce the carbon footprint from transport, we source our ingredients as locally as possible. We only use South England based suppliers who mostly buy directly from source, and our packaging and labels suppliers are also based in England.
All of our ingredients come in recyclable packaging which we also try and re-use as much as we can.
Containers
We try to be as plastic-free as possible in all aspects of our packaging.
Our products are housed in dropper bottles of amber glass, which not only is environmentally-friendly (infinitely reusable, easily recyclable and 40% less polluting than plastic when recycled) but also is 100% non-toxic, and protects the oils from UV light.
Unfortunately, though we've chosen glass pipettes over plastic ones, some of our closures contain plastic. To be as environmentally friendly as possible, we therefore highly encourage our customers to only choose the pipette/pump closures with their first order, then keep them, and buy a refill (which comes with a plastic-free and fully recyclable aluminium cap) with their future purchases, saving money too!
Finally, we also kindly ask our customers to please either find a way to reuse the empty glass bottles or return them following our Return + Refill scheme to also get a further discount. You can read more here.
Labels
Our labels are fully compostable and biodegradable.
The face material is an FSC® certified material made up of 80% recycled material and 20% virgin fibres with a kraft paper backing.
The ink is water-based, recycling compatible, made with non-toxic organic pigments, and complies with standard de-inking and recycling practises.
Shipping Packaging
To save paper, we have consciously decided not to use any outer packaging.
All our packaging material (from the cardboard boxes to the padding/filling material, the wrapping paper and the paper tape) is recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, reusable and made locally from FSC Certified material containing either 100% or mainly recycled content.
Waterless Skincare
Water is one of the most common ingredients found in beauty products. However, water comes with a few problems which affect our bodies and have a big negative impact on our environment.
Schi+Kin have made the conscious decision to only produce waterless skincare.
Here are the main advantages of waterless beauty products:
- it conserves water resources.
- it reduces carbon footprint, as waterless products are less bulky and lighter to transport.
- it limits packaging waste, as products are smaller.
- is richer in active ingredients and more concentrated .
- it lowers the risk of bacteria and there is therefore no need for preservatives, which means less toxic for our skin and also more eco-friendly.
